The Wrong Advice Newsletter — Issue #66 — Gun Violence

I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.

It’s 7/5/22 and there have been north of 305 mass shootings in the US this year. 305. THREE HUNDRED AND FIVE. (a mass shooting with at least 4 injuries or deaths) That is simply an unfathomable statistic. I’m not going to get into the fact that this number is a ridiculous percentage higher than our next closest country in mass shootings because what purpose would it serve? None. We have a gun problem in this country and there’s just no longer denying it.

If you were watching a 4th of July parade yesterday with your family in Chicago you had a horrifying realization that a shooting was taking place while you were supposed to be safe. Perhaps you were in Philadelphia last night taking in the fireworks when the all too similar sounds of gunshots shattered another family friendly event.

Can’t go to school and not get shot.

Can’t go to church and not get shot.

Can’t go to the movies and not get shot.

Can’t go to the supermarket and not get shot.

Home of the free though right? Free to incite violence and kill one another?

Make no mistake, politicians are not going to do shit about the gun problem in America. They are incentivized not too. They are lobbied and bought and paid for to not give a flying fuck whether we live or die.

You know it’s funny, 25-year old me was a pallbearer for the 2nd amendment. To some degree I still am but the simple truth is ordinary citizens do not need weapons that are made to wage war. An AR-15 is not a civilian hunting weapon it is a gun used on the battlefield. It’s a sad reality that the battlefield in question is not on a distant soil somewhere overseas but in our own communities on a weekly basis.

Our country is ripping itself apart and at the end of the day it is up to us to make a change. We have to act now. We have to enact true gun reform that limits the ability for insane people to commit mass murder. If we can’t keep our schools safe, our families safe, our way of life is no longer tenable. I’m mad and I’m sad and what’s worse is that I’m extraordinarily fearful that someone I know or love is going to be a senseless victim to gun violence that could be stopped.

What are we even doing anymore?
