What does your happiness equation look like?

The Happiness Quotient

Have you ever heard of ‘The Happiness Quotient’? The premise ultimately being there are 7 main quotients and each quotient provides a certain level of happiness to your life. I like to think of each quotient as a bucket and you need to fill each bucket up a specified amount that equals an overall happy you.

Each value for the individual quotient is singular to you as a person and is tailored to you in what you need to achieve overall happiness. In other words, maybe you need a high amount in the occupational bucket versus say the spiritual one. Thus these quotients become incredibly specified to your individual happiness.

The model attempts to make it easier for people to be able to create and develop their own happiness. I find the entirety of the concept of happiness incredibly interesting so I put myself through a bit of an exercise to figure out what made up my happiness equation.

I’m sure it won’t be all that shocking to find out that I derive a significant amount of happiness from the occupational bucket. Having spent the last 2 years building my life as a photographer I can tell you first hand how important some semblance of work happiness can be. For me, the fact that I get to make a living picking up tool I love most in the world is truly a blessing but ultimately not the only way.

When I was going through this exercise I realized that most of my happiness was social. Time with family and friends ultimately made up the greatest amount of happiness in my life. The amount of happiness I can gain from an ordinary dinner with my family or just some beers out with friends can’t be overstated.

The best lesson I can aim to provide with this post is that I spent a lot of years masking unhappiness. I put on a big smile and pretended like all was well when things were in fact not. Ultimately it was pretending to be something I wasn’t that made me drastically reevaluate my life and put myself on this course I’m on today.

My hope for you is that if you read this today you take a little time to check in with yourself. Are you happy? Are you just going through the motions? What can you do to make the most of the alarmingly short amount of time we have here existing? That choice is at the end of the day up to you. But if you can, try to figure out some things that equal happiness to you and spend more time of your life doing them.
